Family-run shop in Lanarkshire village scoops community retailer award for second year running.

Posted on in Business News

Nads Store, a family-run shop in Law, Lanarkshire, has been named Community Retailer of the Year at the Scottish Asian and Business Awards ceremony for the second year running.

Award

The shop is owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Nadeem and Fareha, known affectionately to residents as Mr and Mrs Nad. The store was on a shortlist of seven that included opposition from both major cities in the central belt, as well as Paisley, Falkirk and Cupar.

The family moved to Lanarkshire from north-east England over a decade ago and are now play a vital part at the heart of the community in Law. They were surprised to learn they had been nominated for the same award last year. The couple’s son Abdullah, who is now 14 years old, thought at first that his mum was speaking to a scammer when she received the phone call informing them of the nomination. And when they attended the finals ceremony they were shocked to walk away with the prize.

This year they were better prepared but the win as almost as much as a surprise as it did last year.

A delighted Fareha told the Daily Record: “Again it was unexpected. It came up in my news feed that the nominees had been announced and I noticed my brother-in-law’s shop was up. So I took a screenshot and was sending it to my sister.

"Then I looked, and I saw our name was in, and I thought it must be last year’s. I looked again and it was 2023. I was surprised as we hadn’t done as much in the community as the previous year.

"Nad opened a new takeaway in Motherwell this year - Nads Grill ‘n’ Chill - and a lot of our focus went on that.

“Nad says he’s going to up our game and try and go for the hat trick in 2024”.
